Groupboard App is a free virtual whiteboard that gives users a convenient space to create and collaborate. The canvas is versatile and can be embedded into a web page with iPhone, iPad and native Android versions available. Unlike a physical whiteboard, Groupboard App can be customized with background images that allow the user to draw right on top of the photo, mockup or any other visual aid. A designer version is also offered that features advanced tools such as the ability to cut and paste, move, delete, undo and redo, add user defined icons and upload common Office documents including DOC, PPT, PDF and XLS file types. No downloads or plugins are required to begin using the application.Show more screenshots »
Groupboard App was founded in 1998 and promises to offer many convenient features that make it ideal for a wide range of uses. The application mostly lives up to these expectations. The service includes all the basics a user could want although it may be lacking in advanced areas. The web based version gets the job done well enough. Some users complained that the Android version doesn’t permit movement to the SD card.
There are numerous office and business focused products that offer a service similar to Groupboard App. The first thing most users will notice is the price. While many other applications require a subscription for access, Groupboard App gives users access for free. The tradeoff is that the user may find the features list to be a bit shorter than more professional alternatives.
Groupboard App is relatively easy to master. The interface is rather plain with light grey borders and matching buttons that include labels and symbols that are clearly marked. It takes little time to figure out how to draw, save or post messages. That being said, the application really is lacking when it comes to personality. The layout is neat but feels dated. A few sleeker buttons and unique visual elements would make the experience more visually satisfying.
New users can click one of the three “Free Trial Click Here” buttons found along the right side of the Groupboard App homepage. After clicking the blue “register your address details” link on the following page, the user is presented with the registration form. The form asks for an email address, password, contact name, phone number, mailing address and optional company name. Next the user is asked if they would like to upgrade an existing board or create a new one. The last step asks the user to choose their preferred tools and enter a discussion topic. The new account details are emailed to the user. The message must be accessed to begin utilizing the new whiteboard.
Groupboard App’s basic whiteboard is available to anyone for free. This includes access for up to five users. Upgraded versions are available starting with a 15 user hosted Designer board which costs $19.99 per month or $199 per year. This account includes up to 100 saved pictures, 50 background images, 200 forum posts and optional enhanced forum with unlimited messages. A 50 user hosted board is also available for $29.99 per month or $299 per year which includes up to 500 saved pictures, 100 background images and 1,000 forum posts. An enterprise license is also offered for a one-time fee of $749 which includes up to 25 users and unlimited saved pictures, background images and forum posts.
Groupboard is an enticing option for anyone who wants a quick way to collaborate beyond simple text chat, such as educators, instructors and group leaders. The free service is a nice touch however users should really scrutinize the paid options. The application has a dated appearance and requests a lot of personal information just to sign up for the free trial. There may be better alternatives out there based on the needs and budget of the user.
